The Makorori Lookout is one of my favourite local spots to shoot the Milky Way. Dark, scenic and accessible - this place sums up the East Cape by day or night . This image represents the most detailed capture of the Milky Way core that I've ever managed. Shot with an 85mm lens - stacked and stitched - it's over 100 photos merged together. This was all shot sequentially from a single position over a 90 minute period. When I started out the sky was a faint pink & by the time I had finished it was true black.

The Tuahine Point Lighthouse is a Gisborne icon and just so happens to be a particularly dark spot perfect for viewing the stars. After a walk down the beach and a quick scamper over the rocks it feels worlds away from the glowing lights of Gisborne city.

Captured early in the 2020 astro season with the Galactic core of the Milky Way rising to the East, this image overlooks one of Gisborne’s most popular beaches. It was shot a mere stones throw from the famous Highway 35 - at the edge of the parking spot accessing a handful of famous Gisborne surf breaks.

Rocking up on a winters night with crystal clear skies is a pretty nice feeling. On this particular evening I arrived early & shot this image while observing the sky darkening. There were plenty of folks on the wharf making the most of the crisp conditions - including one person with the worlds brightest torch which you can clearly see. At the time it bothered me but in hindsight it actually adds something to the scene. This is a stitched image made up of multiple frames shot with a 50mm lens.

Makorori Beach and it’s lush green cliffs give way to an uninterrupted view facing East. The light above the horizon is Mars rising at close proximity to the Earth. There is a faint crescent moon in the sky behind - adding a slither of light to the scene. Captured in July 2019, this was the first image of its kind to be captured in Tairawhiti Gisborne (as far as I’m aware). A 360 degree Milky Way arch astro panorama. It was also the first time I successfully managed to execute such an image.
